Surface Protection Options for Protecting Wood, Tile, VCT, and Stone Flooring

The installation of a new flooring in a newly built or renovated home is exciting. Once the flooring is installed, your project is almost finished. The floor looks perfect, clean and professional looking, and you want your builder or contractor to keep it looking good. Surface protection helps builders and homeowners prevent damage to newly installed floors, such as scratches, paint spills, etc. What surface protection options are available for each type of soil installed?

There are several key points to keep in mind when choosing a soil protection product:

  • How long does it take to use the floor protection?
  • Is the floor glued?
  • Will there be only pedestrian traffic or machinery used on the protected ground?
  • Should the protection be watertight or splashproof?

Adhesive film is the thinnest and least expensive floor protection product on the market. High quality films are normally 0.003 mils thick and are colored green or blue. They are available in a variety of convenient size rolls. These films are recommended to protect tiles and sealed stones from scratches up to 45 days. They work well to keep grout on clean tiled floors. Before applying to Vinyl Tile (VCT) floors, be sure to know which cleaning or polishing products may have been used on the VCT so that the adhesive does not react with polishing. Adhesive films are not recommended for use on wood floors.

Ram Board® and other compressed paper products are a low-cost protection commonly used to protect wood, tile, stone and VCT floors. Ram Board® is 0.04 thousandths of an inch thick and protects from wheels, trolleys and pedestrian traffic. Ram Board® is not reusable; Although it is made from recycled paper and can be recycled, it is an environmentally friendly building product. Unfortunately, Ram Board® is not a good choice for projects with high construction traffic or exposure to liquids. It must be glued together and on the floor to prevent dirt and grime from getting under the protection and scratching the floor. Ram Board® is a breathable product, so it can be used on all bonded floors, as it allows glue smoke to release gases.

There are also floor care products made from textiles, including Clean & Safe®, Surface Pro® and Top Guard. Clean & Safe® and Top Guard are thick enough to be used on construction sites with heavy traffic. They can be used on wood floors, tiles, vinyl tile, vinyl tile and stone floors. To protect a newly installed glued wood floor, it is mandatory to use a breathable floor protector such as Surface Pro® to maintain the floor under warranty. Textile floor protection products can be reused in other projects and can be cleaned by removing dust or debris before wrapping them up for storage until the next use.

Wooden stairs can be protected with the Multi-Shield slide, a fabric product with a leak-proof top and a sticky bottom. He is able to hold the wooden stairs, but only has enough staple to hold them without leaving any residue. It can be reused if the sticky bottom is kept free of dust. The Multi-Shield slide can also be used on wood, VCT, tile and stone floors.

For commercial projects with a lot of traffic or machinery, Coverguard® floor protection is the best option. Coverguard® is available in 3 thicknesses; 0.01 mil, 0.025 mil and 0.04 mil and had a diamond pattern on the top that makes it slip resistant. As it is made of plastic, it is waterproof and reusable. Coverguard® also resists flames and can be used in hospital projects or other projects requiring fire resistance.

These products and other surface protection products are available from Surface Protection suppliers through in-store sales or via the Internet.
